About YSEI

The Youth Social Enterprise Initiative (YSEI) is designed to empower young social entrepreneurs in developing countries with the necessary knowledge, resources and networks to realize their dreams.

Launched in March 2006, YSEI is a project of the Global Knowledge Partnership, supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). It has been developed by GKP members MITRA, Orphan IT, TakingITglobal and Thai Ruralnet, with the facilitation and oversight of the Global Knowledge Partnership Secretariat.

Social Enterprise

Social entrepreneurs are those who offer practical, and innovative solutions to prevailing problems, with the desire to effect systemic change in society. Globally, such individuals are growing in number. In developing countries, though, the social enterprise movement faces greater challenges than elsewhere. It is here that YSEI hopes to play a role by empowering individuals with the necessary resources to kickstart their projects.

YSEI focuses on social innovation, with special attention to fostering novel ideas, and how existing successful development models can be replicated, combined, expanded, or otherwise modified to suit specific social needs.

What it does

The core principles of YSEI are:

  • To recognise ICTs as essential tools needed to support young social entrepreneurs
  • To build and maintain multi-stakeholder partnerships with academia, civil society, government and the private sector - which are critical to build strong support networks for young social entrepreneurs
  • To reach out to disadvantaged youth, as well as marginalised and underrepresented groups in society
  • To promote gender equality and human rights by ending discrimination

Based upon these core principles, YSEI serves as a catalyst that gives an impetus to young social entrepreneurs in developing countries, nurtures them, and helps them become role models in their societies.

This initiative advocates the concept of social enterprise in developing countries; develops locally relevant knowledge and resources; mentors youth who wish to engage in such enterprise; builds community networks in academia, civil society, government and the private sector to support their work; and provides financial and other resources to initiate projects.
