Stockholm Challenge - GKP Awards 2007 Winners Announced!

 

 

The Stockholm Challenge GKP Awards 2007 is a parallel initiative to the Stockholm Challenge 2008. A collaboration between the Stockholm Challenge and Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP), the joint awards reflect the complementary interests and strengths of both organisations as important platforms for the global promotion of Knowledge for Development (K4D) and ICT for Development (ICT4D).

The Stockholm Challenge GKP Awards 2007 prizes were awarded to projects that demonstrate exemplary and innovative Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships in four Stockholm Challenge Award categories: Education, Culture, Economic Development and Public Administration.

A MSP is defined as a working partnership involving stakeholder organisations from 3 sectors (government, business and civil society) that leverage on complementary competencies and shares project costs, risks and benefits for a common goal.

The aims of the new initiative were:

• To encourage, identify, analyse and profile innovation and excellence in K4D and ICT4D, with a special focus on multi-stakeholder partnerships.

• To increase learning, collaborative and partnership opportunities by profiling the activities of selected organisations based on merit.

• To raise awareness for the multi-stakeholder dimension in K4D and ICT4D by showcasing concrete examples to facilitate greater learning.
  
  

Culture:

• Network of Public Libraries - Medellin Metropolitan Area, Colombia

Jury comment: “A good example of a public good provided in partnership to ensure sustainability.”

Economic Development:

• Enabling financial inclusion and increasing efficiency of Self Help Groups Microcredit Federations, India

Jury comment: “Accessible tools that facilitate the self management of communities, an excellent application of technology.”

Education:

• Shilpa Satya Project - Digital Self Learning for remote, rural students lacking educational resources and teachers, Sri Lanka

Public Administration:

• The etuktuk project, Sri Lanka

Jury comment: “A project that electronically expands the community center into isolated rural areas."

The winners were selected amongst nine finalists out of 119 entries by the jury as the best examples of the role of Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for Development. They will also be sponsored by GKP to participate in Stockholm Challenge Week in May 2008.

The operation dates of the Stockholm Challenge GKP Awards 2007 were:

• 1 January 2007: Award opens for applications

• Extended to 15 September 2007: Award closes for jury deliberations

• 15 October 15 2007: Jury decision, announcement of finalists, followed by finalists notification of travel arrangements

• 11-13 December 2007: Winner announcement and award presentation at the Global Knowledge Event for the Future in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

• 22 May 2008: Winners go to Challenge Week in Stockholm
