Media Awards


Since 2003, GKP has presented a series of media awards in collaboration with several partners.

 

The GKP-Panos Journalism Awards

Partner: PANOS Institute

The GKP-Panos Journalism Awards recognise thoughtful and incisive reporting from the print, radio, TV and Web-based media on the Information Society through analyses of social and political impacts and policy implications. The Awards are made for published journalism by developing country journalists (print, radio, TV or Web) that go beyond describing projects or new investment initiatives to analyse broader questions like the social impact of ICT, particularly on rural and disadvantaged groups, or national and global communication policy issues.

The AISI/GKP/SDC/IDRC/IICD Media Awards for African Journalists
Partners: African Information Society Initiative, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the International Institute for Communication & Development (IICD)

 

The AISI/GKP/SDC/IDRC/IICD Media Awards for African Journalists, a special category under the 2007 AISI Media Awards programme, recognise best reporting on the information society in Africa on the themes of emerging people, markets and technologies, in conjunction with the Third Global Knowledge Conference (GK3) .

 

2007 Award Winners

AISI-GKP Media Awards for Reporting on Emerging People, Emerging Markets and Emerging Technologies, supported by SDC:

  • Print Category
    Bamuturaki Musinguzi, Daily Monitor Newspaper, Uganda


    His article 'Taking ICT to Rural Communities' uses examples of rural people who have benefited from the establishment of telecentres in their community to improve the services they provide and the profits they obtain for their businesses. It provides a clear example of how ICTs can lead to an improvement in people’s livelihood, and shows how community multimedia centers can contribute for socio-economic development as emerging technologies promoting emerging people.

    Chabi Godefroy Macaire, Office de Radiodifussion et Television du Benin (ORTB), Benin

    The radio programme La Gouvernance Locale Tisse Sa Toile covers a story on web development with the involvement of the beneficiary and content development as emerging technology for the community. The programme is well focused on community development aspect as well as ICT’s socioeconomic impact. It also addresses information provision and training of the community including decision makers on ICT opportunities and their subsequent involvement.

    Bayero Agabi, Africa Independent Television, Nigeria

    His TV programme 'Why the Phones Are Not Bridging the Divide' provides a broad coverage on the various facets of using ICTs and how these could be improved to become a real emerging tool to help emerging market and emerging people. The question of affordability was highlighted very well in the programme.
  • Multimedia/Web Media Category
    Emily Nyarko, TV3 Network, Ghana

    Her article, 'Developing ICT Enabled Education – the Future for Ghana', is a very comprehensive showing how the government of Ghana, with collaboration from several stakeholders, is seeking to embed ICTs in the education system, as emerging services (technologies) in order to create an ICT literate society. It covers the opportunities that ICTs offer to promote gender, socioeconomic development as well as community development.

 

AISI-GKP Media Award for Reporting on ICT Research and Innovation, supported by IDRC:

  • Evelyn Tagbo, Businessday, Nigeria

    The very oxygen that spread the uptake of ICTs in any country is education – and her article, 'Nigerian Higher Institutions in ICT Age', tackles the important area of using ICTs to spread learning in Nigeria through e-learning including m-learning.

AISI-GKP Media Award for Reporting on ICT Policy, supported by IDRC:

  • Adetokunbo Abiola, The Hope Newspaper, Nigeria

    Many efforts are being done by Governments and institutions to change the ways of doing daily tasks by the community and introduce some improvements in the process. His article 'ICT: Bringing Information Technology to the People' tries to showcase great initiatives and link them to realities.

AISI-GKP Media Award for Reporting on Local Content Applications, supported by IICD:

  • Haytham Ahmed Abd El-Wahab Dardeer, Al Mal Newspaper, Egypt

    His article “Contact centers hold the key to investment attraction”, discuses Egyptian Contact Centers as key emerging markets and potential for outsourcing and investment attraction in Egypt. The paper argues that the expansion of business corporations and the government agencies using contact centers underscores the spectacular development of the telecommunications sector in Egypt and growth of its investments.

AISI-GKP Media Award for Reporting on Local Content, supported by IICD:

  • John Mireny, The Guardian, Tanzania

    His article, 'Computer Software in Kiswahili Beats Barriers to Learning and e-Commerce', describes a very important and empowering area of work, improving access to ICTs for millions of East Africans who speak Kiswahili, and more importantly, do not speak any European languages. It is a clear presentation of the complexities inherent in translating computer software into Kiswahili and the ongoing work to do so.

The AISI/GKP/SDC Media Awards for African Journalists
Partners: African Information Society Initiative and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)

 

The AISI/GKP/SDC Media Awards for African Journalists, a special category under the 2005 AISI Media Awards programme, recognise contributions towards a better understanding of the information society in Africa through more informed coverage on ICT for development issues in Africa. It aims at recognising journalists reporting on the WSIS process in relation to Africa.

"Les Initiatives Africaines dans le processus du SMSI, Togo"
A video that provides a broad analysis on WSIS, its plans for implementation and links with African programmes.

 

  • Salif Sanogo, Mali

"CyberNTIC, Mali"
A video that focuses on the WSIS process from Geneva to Tunis.

 

  • Emmanuel Onyango, Tanzania
"Get to know about the WSIS and its processes; Towards WSIS: Why Africas participation is important; Why African media should be recognised at WSIS"
Articles focused on creating awareness on the WSIS process, and the importance of Africa's participation in the process.
